Some things to know about RockFiber
TM
What exactly is Rockfiber™?
RockFiber™ is a material made from extremely fine fibers of igneous rock. It is similar to fiberglass in some ways, but is made from a single, naturally occurring raw material. The rock is melted at high temperatures through an induction process and then extruded through small nozzles to create thin fibers.
What are the applications for Rockfiber™?
They're limitless. Enhanced by Rockfiber™, available both in roving and chopped form, FRP composites reach new levels of strength, lightness and durability. The innovative material is inherently flame resistant, non-corrosive and hydrophobic, ensuring versatility across a wide range of industries ranging athletic equipment to aerospace, and everything in between.
What is an FRP?
FRP stands for Fiber-Reinforced Polymer. It refers to a composite material made of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibers. The polymer matrix can be a thermoset or thermoplastic resin, and the fibers are typically glass, carbon, or basalt (a common type of igneous rock.)
How is RockFiber™ used in infrastructure?
FRP composites can be used to fortify concrete structures like bridges, sea walls and pre-cast cement pipes, enhancing their resilience and durability. Rockfiber™, as the core load-bearing component in FRP rebar or as a macrofiber product added to concrete, significantly extends the life of these structures.
Is Rockfiber™ really sustainable?
Yes. Made from a single, abundant and unprocessed natural material, and manufactured using electricity powered by renewables, Rockfiber™ is a sustainable and decarbonizing material.
Basalt fiber isn't new. What's different about Rockfiber™?
Conceptually nothing is new here, we're melting rocks to make filaments, but our induction process is a game-changer. It offers better temperature, control, more flexibility, and is eco-friendly. This allows for the use of a wider range of rocks to produce higher quality, purer, and stronger filaments at scale.
